The Weyburn Red Wings kicked off 3 games in 3 nights with a 3-2 shootout win over the Nipawin Hawks Thursday night at home.
Weyburn would open the scoring with just 49 seconds left in the opening period as Riley See would net his 3rd of the campaign to give the home side the lead after 20 minutes.
However, Nipawin would bounce back in the 2nd. Joel Mabin would tie the game with his 3rd of the year with 2:59 remaining in the middle frame and in the last minute of the period, it would be Rylan Lefebvre finding the back of the net for the first time this season to vault Nipawin to a 2-1 lead.
The third period was back and forth between the two squads, but Weyburn would score the equalizer just past the halfway point of the period thanks to Simon Pollock’s 2nd of the year. Both teams had chances to take the lead in the final 9 minutes of the 3rd, but both Dazza Mitchell and Reid Lalonde would stand tall, sending the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, the Nipawin Hawks would get two chances on the power-play to score the go-ahead goal, but the Wings would hold off the Hawks and force the game to a shootout. In the shootout, just like the actual game, the two teams would go back and forth. The first four shooters would all score which was then followed by two stops, which resulted in extra shooters. In the 6th round Jacob Kalin would score the shootout winner for Weyburn and they would earn the 3-2 shootout win.
With the victory, Weyburn improves to 4-5-0-0 on the season and will now head to Battlefords for a pair of games this weekend. Meanwhile, for Nipawin, they are now 4-4-1-1 and will wrap up their 3 game in 3 night road trip Friday night in Estevan against the Bruins.
