The Holiday Trade Freeze thawed on Jan. 1 ahead of the Jan. 10 deadline, and the Weyburn Red Wings and Humboldt Broncos were the first partners to make a big move.

Weyburn has dealt long-time fan-favourite goaltender Dazza Mitchell to Humboldt, along with a 2025 SJHL Draft Pick, in exchange for forward Josh Sale and goaltender Ty Matonovich.

Mitchell, 20, hails from Regina, SK, and has appeared in 116 SJHL games, all for the Wings. He won 48 games in a Weyburn jersey between 2021 and 2024.

Sale, 19, posted 12 points in 28 games in his first season with the Broncos this campaign. He joined Humboldt in the off-season after 36 games with the Blackfalds Bulldogs, split between the Alberta Junior Hockey League and British Columbia Hockey League, last year. He is from Prince George, BC.

Matonovich, 19, of Calgary, AB, appeared in 10 games for Humboldt over the last two seasons and posted a .894 save percentage over that span.
